The Open’s most unlikely contender is the son of a pig farmer who almost quit golf.

Daniel Brown, a 29-year-old Englishman playing his first career major, came close to quitting professional golf five years ago, but now he enters the weekend tied for second place.

For the first time since 1951, the top three players at the halfway stage of The Open Championship are all from Ireland or the United Kingdom:

• -7: Shane Lowry (Ireland)
• -5: Daniel Brown (England), Justin Rose (England)

Speaking after sinking that putt to make the cut, Max Homa says: "It felt really good. I haven't had a lot of great moments this year. Hopefully I get two more days of this.

"I just love this golf touranment. I was proud of myself for not packing it in today after two really bad holes.

"I'm stoked to have a chance tomorrow."

Rounding out a few other notable names:

• 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley cards a 75 to miss the cut by one stroke at +7.
• Last year's Open Championship winner Brian Harman birdies 18 to card a 73 and head into the weekend at +4.
• Tyrrell Hatton bogeyed two of the last three holes and was six-over-par on the back nine overall to finish at +8 and miss the cut.

T100: DeChambeau (+9) 75

Bryson DeChambeau's tournament is over. After shooting five-over-par yesterday, he could only do one stroke better today. The winner of last month's U.S. Open misses the cut by three strokes.

Robert MacIntyre achieved a rare feat today, making the cut despite carding a triple bogeys on 1 and 4.

He became just the third player in the last 30 years to record multiple triple bogeys or worse in round 2 of a major and still make the cut, joining Brett Ogle at the 1996 Open and Mark Hensby at the 2005 Open.

T51: MacIntyre (+5) 75

A disastrous start to the day threatened to see last week's Scottish Open winner miss the cut, but a back nine at three-under-par has Robert MacIntyre safely in the clubhouse with two more days of golf to play.

T13: Rahm (+1) 70

Rahm leaves a six-foot putt just short of the hole on 18, missing an opportunity to get back to even par heading into the weekend. Still, the two-time major winner sits in a decent position to get into the mix on moving day.

T90: DeChambeau (+8) +3 thru 16

Bryson DeChambeau has an oppotunity for a direly needed birdie on 16 but fails to putt home from 10 feet. He likely needs to birdie both of his remaining holes now to continue playing into the weekend.

T51: MacIntyre (+5) +4 thru 16

Robert MacIntyre records his second straight birdie on the 16th hole. Since shooting eight-over-par on his first four holes of the day, he's carded four birdies and no bogeys to get back under the cut line.

T134: McIlroy (+12) +5 thru 14

Finally something goes right for Rory McIlroy. He was so far deep in the 14th hole greenside bunker you could barely see his shoulders peeking out over its edge. But McIlroy blasted it out of the sand and holed out for birdie. When it fell over the lip of the cup all McIlroy could do was smile, and immediately donate his ball into the gallery.

It's been a long two days for the four-time major champion. He'll be packing up from Royal Troon early, but it seemed as though the hole-out provided at least a moment of relief.

T11: Rahm (E) -2 thru 15

The word NBC's commentators have used over and over to describe Jon Rahm's performance today is "patient." He hasn't forced anything, instead accepting what the course has given him. After shooting even par on the front nine, he's now recorded back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 to get to even for the tournament.

T11: Niemann (E) E thru 15

Joaquin Niemann appeared to have ruined his tournament when he carded a quintuple bogey on the par-three eighth hole, but he's nearly recovered all five of those strokes. Birdies on 10, 12, 14 and 15 have gotten him back to even par for the tournament.

T95: DeChambeau (+8) +3 thru 12

Bryson DeChambeau was sitting right at the cut line at six-over-par as he turned to the back nine, but two bogeys in the next three holes has him at risk of missing the weekend. Things could have been worse, though, as he avoided a double bogey on 12 by rolling in a 24-foot putt.

T39: Thomas (+4) 78

Justin Thomas followed yesterday's 68 with a 78 today, but that doesn't tell the full story. He shot a 45 on the front nine today, seemingly headed towards missing the cut line, but followed that with a 33 on the back nine to bounce back and secure weekend golf.

It's hard to put into words how good that round was from 43-year-old Justin Rose. He beat the field average by 8 shots and holed one more birdie on the 18th to make it extra sweet.

Rose put himself in contention to win after the Saturday round of this year's PGA Championship and spoke about wanting to give himself "the Indian summer" of his career. It looks like he's very much carrying out that mission.
